Hanging Out My Shingle.
I completed my articles at a small law firm in the suburb of Cowies Hill, Durban. When they commenced in early 2020, I was a ball of nerves and uncertainty, greeting my boss as Sir until he had to interrupt me and sanction his nickname. Questioning myself – is this what I want to do with my career? Do I need to wear these uncomfortable court heels to work every day? And kicking myself for leaving my lunch on the kitchen table.
Despite these uncertainties, I found my feet (and flat work shoes), and I do not believe I could have received a better learning experience anywhere else. From the beginning I was given control and responsibility over matters. At the same time, I had a practical and experienced principal from whom I could get guidance and support. I found confidence in my work as well as the drive to continue learning and asking questions.
When I was admitted as an attorney, I was presented with the opportunity to establish my own law firm. An opportunity which any right-minded person would have reconsidered, but I dived in head-first and, my word, what an immense 18 months it has been – a whirlwind to say the least. I’ve learnt more than I could ever have imagined, cried more than I hoped, but most importantly kept moving forward.
It was difficult to know where to begin, but I was fortunate enough to have a stable client base from the get-go. A huge steppingstone that helped me hang out my shingle. Since then, I have acclimatized, so to speak, moved into my own office space and qualified as a Conveyancer and Notary. I can honestly say that I have grown with the firm. I haven’t forced appearances or tried to be like the bigger, more corporate law firms nor pretended to know it all but found answers and solutions through research and collaboration with experts, colleagues and third-party providers. I have maintained close connections with my clients, allowing them to challenge and encourage me. My commitment to helping clients navigate the legal process has allowed me to provide affordable and comprehensive advice. And I am proud to say that Phillips & Associates has preserved its detail-oriented, client-focused pledge and continues to grow every day.
